About Quepos

Quepos is the capital of Aguirre canton in Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica. The town is about 60 km. south (in a straight line) from Costa Rica’s capital, San José, but is 160 km from that city by road if going through the localities of Jaco, Atenas, Orotina and Tárcoles.

Quepos is the gateway to Manuel Antonio National Park. Quepos is the city and Manuel Antonio is the mountain.  The two cities are really just one using the same police, Muni, and sharing all other services.  The city of Quepos is very tourism-oriented, having many bars, new marina with restaurants, and a vivacious night-life. The town is named for the native Quepo Indians who inhabited the area including Cocal Island in the colonial era.

Quepos is well known thanks to being the gateway to the popular Manuel Antonio National Park and white sand beaches in Costa Rica. Several years ago the country’s park service imposed limits on the number of visitors to the National park limiting it to 600 visitors per day. The park is closed on Mondays. Quepos offers fishing for numerous varieties of fish, especially Pacific Marlin an Sailfish. Peak fishing season is from November to April for billfish and the new Quepos marina is the hotspot for all of Costa Rica. The Quespos marina is also home to the #1 Rated Trip Advisor tour, Segway Costa Rica.
